If you’re still not sure which leveling guide is the best, it’s hands down Aeon Guide. It’s our honest recommendation you check that one before any other guide as it’s most detailed and most helpful. It costs a bit more than other guides, but it’s well worth it. You can read more in our review here.

Players who are still undecided in their character choices are rare, and as the game gets closer to release no doubt you’ll be interested in the popularity of all those options. Want to know which faction is more popular? Which race others will pick, and which class will they play? Look no further, as we now brought all these crucial numbers into one single infographic showing you the latest numbers.

Factions

Those who still are undecided in their choices, hopefully these statistics will help at least a bit. If you want to play the underdog faction, go for the Republic. Sith Empire wins in every single poll I’ve seen and their numbers are apparently still growing.

Species

For species, it doesn’t really matter which one you choose. There are no gamebreaking racial traits, so simply pick the one you like most. As you can see, Humans are most popular with 29% of all players choosing them.

Classes

Class popularity is always prone to change, and from the latest numbers some things are different, most notably Bounty Hunter jumping to the second place in popularity, right after Sith Inquisitors, which are still by far the most popular class choice. Sith Warriors and Jedi Consulars were always pretty high up the list, but Jedi Knight have dropped a couple of percent in the recent weeks, along with a slight rise in popularity of Troopers and Imperial Agents. Smugglers are still the least played class, despite looking like an awful lot of fun.

Crafting Skills

As for crafting skills, Artifice is the most popular one with almost a third of the entire population picking it. It isn’t all that surprising, since among other things it creates items required for improving lightsabers, therefore it’s most useful for Jedi Knights and Consulars, and Sith Inquisitors and Warriors. Synthweaving takes second place with 21%: it’s most useful for light armor users, but basically the same classes as artifice. Cybertech, Biochem, Armstech and Armormech respectively get picked by 14%, 13%, 12% and 10% of the player base.

Gathering Skills

From gathering skills, Archaeology is the most popular one with a stunning 41%. The materials gathered by it (lightsaber crystals, even matrix shards) are used in Synthweaving and Artificing, which as we stated are the two most popular crafting professions. Slicing comes at the second place with 36%: resources gathered by it are mainly used for Cybertech, but there’s other valuable recipes and stuff as well. The popularity of slicing is probably high due to the fact this is hands down the best profession for making credits, at least in the current beta build. Scavenging takes the third place with 26%, followed by Bioanalysis with only 13%: considering all classes can benefit from Bioanalysis and the market demand for potions will surely be decent, I do find it a bit surprising. Only 1% of players won’t pick any gathering crew skills.

Mission Skills

From mission skills, Underworld Trading seems to be just one percent higher than Treasure Hunting, which has a 27% popularity. Diplomacy and Investigation share the third and fourth place with 19% each. A total of 7% of players won’t be making their companions busy by taking mission skills, which from these numbers will in most cases be supplemented by two gathering skills, especially early on when making credits will be more important to most players than having two maxed-out crafting skills.

Conclusion

In any case, hopefully these numbers and analysis enlightened you a little bit and helped you make some tough choices. If not, well, share it anyway. And be sure to let us know what you think below!

This is one of those systems in Star Wars: The Old Republic that can be quite confusing for a lot of players. This article will attempt to explain what datacrons, matrix crystals, matrix shards and relics are, and hopefully help you use them as efficiently as possible.

Datacrons are basically a free way to gain additional character attributes in SWTOR, and everyone who wants to get the most out of their character will certainly be interested in it.

Basics

As you explore the worlds of Star Wars: The Old Republic you will discover Datacrons. These powerful items will give you an increase to your base stats when you loot them. In addition you will sometimes receive a Matrix Shard (Matrix Crystal), which you can use to construct a Relic (Matrix Cube). Your character has three relic shots, which you can use to customize your stats to suit your requirements.

The color crystals you use in constructing your relics will determine the stats of the finished relic. The Matrix shards come in the following colors:

Red: Strength

Blue: Willpower

Yellow: Endurance

Green: Aim/Cunning

Note that higher level crystals will get you better stats as well.

Building Relics

As previously mentioned, your character has 3 slots for relics (some sources say 2, we’ll have to wait for the release to know for sure), and to create one relic you’ll need 3 matrix shards, which are obtained from certain datacrons. You can find out if you already obtained some shards by checking your inventory’s quest tab. In order to create a relic, you’ll need first obtain matrix shard, and then visit one of the following locations, depending on your faction choice:

Republic: Assembly Room, Jedi Temple on Coruscant

Empire: Ancient Assembly Chamber, near the Dark Temple on Dromund Kaas (-1785, 556)

Make sure the required items are in your inventory, and once you’re at the assembly altar you will need to set the 3 pillars with your choice of colors (look at which stats you want to gain above). It doesn’t matter in which order you put the colors/pillars. After you’re done, click on the matrix assembly altar in the middle of the room and confirm your choice. After the animation is complete, loot the glowing cube on the altar, and equip the matrix cube from your inventory (quest tab).

Crystal Color Combinations

The basic colors and their attributes are listed above, but here it is again: Red: Strength, Blue: Willpower, Yellow: Endurance, Green: Aim/Cunning. Apparently the results of combining shards are the same regardless of your class, but it does seem that using the same color multiple times yields a higher level Relic with better stats.

Below are some of the known combinations:

RYR – 8 Strength, 30 Endurance, 11 Willpower, 14 Accuracy

RRB - 25 Endurance, 10 Willpower, 10 Presence, 19 Force Power

YYY – 18 Aim, 60 Endurance, 34 Cunning, 30 Absorption

RYB – 6 Strength, 12 Endurance, 6 Willpower

GBB – 9 Aim, 17 Endurance, 9 Cunning, 9 Accuracy

YBB – 7 Strength, 20 Endurance, 5 Willpower, 10 Defense

RBB – 17 Endurance, 7 Willpower, 7 Presence, 13 Critical

RBG – 6 Aim, 6 Endurance, 12 Cunning

GYY – 17 Endurance, 9 Cunning, 9 Presence, 9 Crit

RYY – 7 Strength, 17 Endurance, 7 Willpower, 13 Accuracy

Disassembling Relics

Fortunately, using crystals for creating relics is means they’re not permanently gone. You can bring along a Disassembler Core to the Assembly Room/Temple to break down an existing matrix cube back into shards, which can then again be used to assemble another cube, by using a different machine found in the same room. Note however that disassembler cores do in fact disappear after use. However, disassembler cores can be obtained from vendors on certain worlds making them easy to come by:

Empire: Jawa in Mos Ila called Pitkth

Republic: salvage yard right at the northern point of Anchorhead, just inside the walls (-822, 3564).

Matrix Amplifier, Matrix Emitter & Matrix Prism

They can be gained through gathering skills (Archaeology) or via creature drops. Apparently they can be combined with matrix cubes to alter its effects, but the details on that are still unknown.

When you arrive at the room with the Datacron you will notice a bulldozer in the room. You will need to jump onto the bulldozer and then jump box to box until you reach the Datacron. The closest flight path is Bomber Command Post. This one is frustrating, but at least you won’t die to fall damage!

Loc: 1047, 454 [+10 Aim] – This Datacron is almost due east of 75th Legion Forward Camp on a beam that is raised off the ground. To access it you will need to jump up on the beam and walk to it. Again patience on your jumps will get you to your prize! Access to the beam can be had at: 941, 314.

Loc: 1187,-574 [+10 Presence] – You will enter Transport Station 5 (Directly North of Border Assault Post) at 390, 3 at the first split in the road you will make a left turn and keep going until you arrive at the Datacron location. The Datacron is located on a raised platform, it is fairly obvious how you will access it.

Loc: 442, -772 [+10 Willpower] – The last location is Northeast of Forward Post Alpha. You will be doing some beam walking starting at location: 359, -901. If you fall, you WILL die!

Loc: Not Provided [+10 Willpower] – [R] This datacron is in the Abandoned Power Plant within Tulara Marsh up on a gantry inside the area. You need 2 people to get this datacron. In front of the datacron is a small lower area that you can get to by a slope. Just the the side of the slope is a box with 2 pipe ends in it. At the end of the slope on the same side is a box of machinery with an interactive switch. Now…..player (A) needs to stand over the pipe end that’s nearest the switch machinery but closer to the middle of the pipe ends box while facing AWAY from the machinery with the interactive switch. Player (B) then activates the switch and Player (A) will shoot up into the air and hopefully land on the pipes high up. You should have landed on the top of 2 thick pipes. Drop down onto the lower thick pipe and you should then see a thin pipe leading toward the datacron. From there it should be easy.

Quesh:

Loc: 207, 769 [+10 Endurance] – Look for a swear pipe with bars and you should be able to see the datacron, there’s an entrace to the datacron from the north and south.

Loc: 426, -130 [+10 Cunning] – This is northwest of the Republic Operational Headquarters. Fairly easy to find, go to the target area, you’ll see a hole in the fence.

Loc: 558, 1422 [+10 Strength] – Near the three families war camp on a hill.

Hoth:

Loc: -735, 1702 [Red Matrix Shard] – This Datacron is located in the Highmount Ridge area which is South of Leth Outpost. The Datacron is out in the open, nothing special needed to claim it.

Loc: 3143, 471 [+10 Cunning] – This Datacron is located on the second floor of the Star of Coruscant. You will need to use the 3 moving boxes to navigate your way to the Datacron. Your starting point is 3248, 493. The entrance to the Star of Coruscant is on the bottom right of the starship graveyard.

Loc: 1041, -1245 [+10 Presence] – This Datacron is almost a strait shot North of Frostwake Outpost near the top of the map. It appears to be on a hillside and unreachable however at 1145, -995 there is a ledge on the hillside that you can hop onto and ride it North. When the ledge ends you jump down (hug the wall) and follow the path through a cave and to your Datacron.

Loc: 2837, -374 [+10 Endurance] – Jump up the ice from the start (2607, -844) until you are above what looks like an ice bridge, which you drop down onto. Then follow the routes jumping up the ice at the end to get to the right level and the Datacron should be at the end.

Belsalvis:

Loc: -2354, -2319 [+10 Aim] – In the tomb area, look for a lava pit and travel across the hard to see laser bridge.

Loc: -1906, -2562 [Green Matrix Shard] – In the tomb area, there should be a lift in a small cave that takes you down to a machine that requires a group of people that all contain a Rakata Energy Cubes to create a datacron. Known spawn points for Rakata Cubes are: (-2711, 888), (-2789, 956), (-606, 746), there are likely other spawn points as well. At present time, this Datacron is broken and does not give you the promised Matrix Shard.

Loc: -2073, 377 [+10 Willpower] – In the Belsavis high security section you will find a pathway located at (-2399, 391) follow it to the Datacron.

Loc: -3484, -867 [+10 Presence] – Your start point for this is a pair of rocks (-3705, -562). You will notice a tunnel between the rocks, follow it and walk along the ledge to the right to the datacron. This is located in the Belsalvis Maximum Security Section almost directly to the east of the Maximum Security Thoroughfare.

Loc: -2562,-839 [+10 endurance] – This Datacron is located in a cave in the Northern section of the High Security Area. Starting point is -2475,-775 there a large group of rocks there go around and climb on the rocks and you’ll see a large gap between the rocks and the wall go down this gap and you’ll see a cave entrance the datacron is inside the cave.

Voss:

Loc: -29, 371 [+10 Willpower] – This one is fairly strait forward to get to. At location -442, 402 you will see a grassy path, which you will follow to a rock formation (-432, 179) forming “steps” you will jump from one step to another. At the top of the steps there is a cave, you will follow the cave to your prize. Near the Fort Kodentha flight path.

Loc: 2000, -940 [+10 Presence] – In the Northeast corner of the nightmare lands you will find a small island with three Voss Mystics meditating. You will click on a mediation tablet that will put you in a dream state. You need only click the Datacron at this point.

Corellia & Ilum:

No datacrons have yet been discovered on Corellia or Ilum. If you find one please let me know.

Now that the final beta weekend has started and we’re a month away from release, more and more players will be looking for tips and guides for leveling in SWTOR. I will post some more advanced guides at a later date, but for now I’ll give you some basic tips and tricks you should know about. This should help you understand the basics of leveling and figure out how to speed up the process.

It doesn’t really matter which class or planet you start on, this guide will try to focus on generic tips that are valid for any zone or class.

Starting Planet

First of all, try to hit at least level 10 on your starting planet (about 5-7 hours of gameplay). You gain access to your advanced class at that level, and it’ll be much easier later on. Also, make sure you do the flashpoint for some extra experience and potentially gear. While it’s not necessary, it is recommended to hit level 10 before doing your first flashpoint, as you will have access to new and improved abilities from your advanced class. Healing is not required, but it makes it a lot easier. Starting planets have about 60% class quests, dropping to about 40% on capital planets, and even lower later on.

If you can’t get level 10 on your starting planet, you missed out on something. Make sure to check the list of quests and complete as many as you can, and kill some mobs on the way as well. Of course you want to move on to another planet as soon as possible (mostly because you’ll be interested in your character story development), but it’ll be a lot easier if you complete everything before.

Class Quests

Especially make sure that you always complete ALL class quests: getting your advanced class is an exception, but most important things you get in SWTOR are via class quests. Speaking of important things, you get your ship at around level 15-17, depending on how you’re progressing with class quests.

Another important thing you get from class quests are companions. On your first world you’ll be able to “solo” most group quests with your companion, so be sure to pick them up as soon as you can so you don’t need to sit around waiting to find a group.

Class quests will always lead you to the next area you’re supposed to go to, so if you ever get lost of confused just follow them. However, do often note the levels of quests you have, as some will be above the recommended level and might be hard to complete; it’s especially true for heroic quests. Again, the more quests you complete and levels you get in one area, the easier it’ll be in the next.

Grouping

Another great tip you should know about is that accepting and finishing quests in groups gives you social points, which unlock various rewards. Speaking of groups, SWTOR goes to great lengths to encourage grouping with other players. Social Points are basically free rewards you get simply by being grouped up with other players: some are cosmetic and don’t impact anything much, but they are still nice to have.

On each planet you have 6-12 group (heroic) quests which should preferably be done with other players rather than your companions. There’s many benefits to leveling in groups: obviously you gain less experience for killing mobs, but you clear them a lot faster. The heroic quests mentioned are repeatable once every 24 hours, and a great ways to boost your levels quickly, especially if you’re behind. They also give much better items, and the experience rewards are often 2-3 times higher than solo quests. Basically, if you can get a good group take advantage of it.

Flashpoints

Another thing you should always do are flashpoints, just don’t attempt them solo or with companions alone. These instances aren’t hard, will give you great items, some experience from killing mobs and plenty of experience from related missions. Some may disagree, but I find flashpoints quite fun to do as well, and you might just like them too.

Bonus Quests

One other thing to note is that you should always do bonus quests when possible: you’ll gain them automatically after triggering something, such as killing a particular monster. Just make sure to finish bonus quests before moving on to a related main quest as the bonus one will often automatically disappear and you’ll have no way of completing it afterwards. The are usually very easy to complete and can be done along with another mission.

Summary:

Hit level 10 before moving onto second planet.

Always do all class quests.

Try to complete bonus quests whenever possible.

Always do flashpoints.

If you can find a good group, leveling will be faster and easier.

Overall, leveling in Star Wars: The Old Republic isn’t all that hard or complicated, but it does take time. I do hope the few tips I gave you above will help you gain levels faster. If you want to contribute to this post with your own tips please post a comment below or contact me.

This is a list of planets you will visit and their recommended level ranges. It should help you figure out where you should be headed after you’re done with one zone, and tell you a bit about what you can expect.

Level 1-10 (starting planets)

Hutta

Korriban

Ord Mantell

Tython

Imperial Agents and Bounty Hunters start their adventure on Hutta. Sith Inquisitors & Warriors start on Korriban, Troopers & Smugglers on Ord Mantell and Jedi Knights and Consulars on Tython.

Level 10-16 – Coruscant, Dromund Kass

Galactic Republic faction players move on to Coruscant, and Sith Empire players visit Dromund Kass. Each of these planets also has the faction’s respective capital city as well.

Level 16-20 – Balmorra

Balmorra is the next planet in line. The planet is occupied by the Empire and mostly has vast plains.

Level 20-24 – Nar Shaddaa

Nar Shaddaa is an independent planet where you’ll first encounter players of the other faction in some neutral zones. The planet is basically a cityscape.

Level 24-28 – Tattoine

Tattoine probably doesn’t require any special introduction. It’s an independent planet with some Imperial presence on which the largest settlement is Anchorhead. It mostly has vast deserts and endless sand. Be sure to bring some sun protection.

Level 28-32 – Alderaan

Alderaan is also an independent planet, but the scenery is quite different from the last planet you visited: forests, mountain peaks and plains will certainly be a welcome change from Tattoine. This planet also has Alderaan Warzone: it’s an objective based, 8v8 PvP area. Be sure to check it out as you do get experience in PvP as well.

Level 32-36 – Taris

From the beautiful scenery of Alderaan we’re moving again to something much less nicer: post-apocalyptic swamps. Another independent planet with multiple levels (layers) to explore.

Level 36-37 – Quesh

Quesh is under the Republic’s control, but the Empire has recently moved in to exploit its resources. It has a poisonous atmosphere, and toxic swamps and marshes. Basically, not a place you’ll want to stay too long at, and fortunately you won’t have to.

Level 37-41 – Hoth

Hoth is an independent planet which has a molten core which is used for mining, but outside it’s a frozen wasteland. The most notable scenery is a lot of old ship wreckage.

Level 41-44 – Belsavis

Belsavis is controlled by The Republic and is largely a frozen wasteland as well, but it does have some areas which are not. Several areas have temperate zones which are habitable thanks to the volcanic activity. A popular raid called Eternity Vault is located on Belsavis.

Level 44-47 – Voss

Voss is the home of two indigenous species, and mostly has autumnish/goldenish forests (think Eversong Woods in WoW).

Level 47-50 – Corellia

Corellia is a well-known planet, and until recently fairly quiet and controlled by Galactic Republic forces. Coronet City is its most notable location. You will most likely hit level 50 on Corellia, after which you can move to…

Level 50 – Ilum

Ilum is currently THE endgame planet for solo players, both PvP and PvE. It has a massive open-world PvP zone where hundreds of players can fight one another, and several level 50 operations (raids). You will learn to love its frozen, mountainous surface and the subterranean crystals.

You can get a quick overview of the planets progression in the infographic below as well:
